The Legacy Begins…
Suddenly rich from oil and natural gas in the late 1800s, Parkersburg, West Virginia flourished into a vivacious city that welcomed businessman and visitors from all over the country. Birthed in that prosperous time, The Blennerhassett Hotel opened its doors in 1889 and began serving guests with an unmatched style and elegance. Designed and built by William Chancellor, a prominent Parkersburg businessman, the hotel was a majestic showplace that radiated the captivating atmosphere of the gaslight era. Grand for its time, the original hotel had approximately 50 guestrooms around a central staircase. Restrooms were common places on each of the four guest floors and the kitchen was located on the fifth floor.
What is now our Library was the original entrance to the hotel. It housed the First National Bank of Parkersburg and had the luxury of electricity. Staying true to the legacy of The Blennerhassett, many updates and additions have been made over the years, with a full restoration taking place in 1985. Registered on the National Register of Historic Places, the charm of the hotel is seen in the architecture and original antiques that have been part of the hotel from its beginning.
Now, a new era is dawning with a vision that will begin another chapter in the legacy of The Blennerhassett.
