Behind a locked door

The Conspiracy

A locked door, named for an 1806 treason plot.

Behind it is The Conspiracy, a small, low room in the oldest part of a building that has been standing since 1889. The name belongs to the island a few miles downriver, where Harman Blennerhassett and Aaron Burr laid the scheme that ended with militia on the lawn and the family's name in a treason indictment. It's easier to find when you're already staying upstairs.

Why it is called that

In 1806 Harman Blennerhassett’s island estate, a few miles downriver from here, became a staging point for the scheme now known as the Burr conspiracy. Militia raided the island. Blennerhassett was indicted for treason, the charges were later dropped, and the family’s fortune did not survive it.

The hotel took the family’s name in 1889. The room takes the rest of the story.
